Purpose:
To help families gain an understanding of the gathering of Israel and Zion.
Opening Song: High on the Mountain Top (hymn 5)
Scripture: “We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth with me renewed and receive it’s paradisiacal glory.” Article of faith 10
LESSON:
Print the picture of the house. Cut out one small heart for each family member.
Give each family member a heart to represent them. Let’s put everyone in a different room in the house. Begin to place everyone’s heart in different rooms in the house picture. How do you think you would like it? It might not be so bad at first, we wouldn’t be able to annoy each other, or argue with each other, but it might get lonely fast. Who could you play with, and talk to? Could we learn from each other? Do you think we would be happy? Would we miss each other?
A long time ago Heavenly Father’s people were divided into 12 tribes, the twelve tribes of Israel. Each tribe represented a part of one family. Enemies of the family and of Heavenly Father came in and scattered ten of those tribes.
The ten tribes of Israel have been scattered all over the world, we are actually a part of that family. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints we have been given the commandment to find scattered Israel, and gather them to a special place called Zion.
Zion will be a safe place where the pure in heart will gather. When Zion is established Heavenly Father has told us it will be a happy place a righteous place, a place we will feel good to be. The most special thing about Zion is that Jesus will be there to love us and lead us.
As a family, our home can be like Zion, a special place. Let’s think of a special place inside our home that we can come together, our own Zion. As you are saying this start gathering all of the hearts to one spot in the house picture. Let’s make it a place the spirit can always be with us, just like how Jesus will be in Zion when it is here.
Just like the ten tribes of Israel, outside forces can drive our family apart too, what are some enemies to our family? What can we do to keep our family together?
ACTIVITES:
1. Cut out hearts to play a “Gathering of Israel” game where someone hides the hearts all over the house and the other family members go and gather them to a pre-designated “Zion”
2. Make a puzzle out of a family picture. Before FHE starts hide the puzzle pieces around the room and have the family find the pieces and build the puzzle. Emphasize that wherever the family is can be Zion.
3. Play Pick up sticks to represent the gathering of Israel
