Article of Faith # 11

PREPARATON: Gather crayons and paper or some other art project for all family members to do.

Purpose: To develop understanding and tolerance for the various religions around the world.
Opening Song: “The Eleventh Article of Faith” csb pg. 130

Scripture: “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

LESSON:

Ask each family member to draw a picture on a piece of paper. As they begin, walk around the room and start critiquing how each member of the family does the project.
Say things like: “We never do that”
“That’s wrong”
“Don’t do it that way”
When they are finished ask them how they felt about their project, and how they liked your help.
Ask them how they would feel if someone said things like that about their beliefs in the Gospel.
“Not only would it make you feel bad, but it isn’t something Heavenly Father wants us to do. Just like we want people to respect our beliefs, we should respect other’s beliefs as well.”
“Part of allowing other people to worship how, where, and what they may is understanding their basic beliefs. By understanding their beliefs, we can be more tolerant and accepting of them as people, and children of God.”

Quote:
“We must never forget that we live in a world of great diversity. The people of the earth are all our Father’s children and are of many and varied religious persuasions. We must cultivate tolerance and appreciation and respect one another. We have differences of doctrine. This need not bring about animosity or any kind of holier-than-thou attitude. “
Gordon B. Hinckley, “The Work Moves Forward,” Ensign, May 1999, 4

Closing Song “I’ll Walk with you” csb pg 140
